Wie das geht? Der Titel der Aussendung trägt des Rätsels Lösung schon in sich: web basierte Schnittstellen. Aus guten Quellen weiß ich, dass Vodafone im Rahmen seiner Widget Aktivitäten an einer web-basierten API arbeitet, die Zugriff auf das Billing System des Carriers, Kamera und GPS etc. des Gerätes bieten könnte. Es ist eine Art Abstraktionsebene, die eine angepasste Browser-Engine als Container bietet, in der einzelnen Web-Applikationen oder Widgets laufen können. Durch spezielle API Calls (Javascript) die von der Browser-Engine interpretiert werden bekommen die im Container laufenden Web-Inhalte Zugriff auf diverse Gerätefunktionen. Auch an einem App Store ähnlichem Ökosystem arbeitet man derzeit, das für die Distribution von Widget oder anderen Applikationen dienen kann.

Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) ist eine neue Initiative von Vodafone im Rahmen derer die neue API einem kleinen Kreis an auswählten Partner im Sommer zur Verfügung gestellt wird.

Nun ist es (quasi) offiziell bestätigt: Der Vodafone Shop führt das HTC Magic und nimmt Vorbestellungen an. Geliefert wird das Gerät dann im Laufe des April. Gegen letzten Gerüchten, dass das HTC Magic vorerst in schwarz verfügbar sein soll, ist das angebotene Handy in weiß verfügbar.
