Symbian goes open

Was vor einigen Jahren noch völlig undenkbar war, wird anscheinend aktuell zum Volkssport. Die einstmaligen walled gardens reißen ihre Gartenzäune weg und tun es den Web2.0 Apps gleich. Nachdem sehr große Konkurrenz ausgehen von Android und der Limo Foundation droht, entschließt man sich aktuell unter der Schirmherrschaft von Nokia auch Symbian offener zu machen. Konkret sind die Pläne von Nokia in Partnerschaft mit den an Symbian beiteiligten Firmen wie Sony Ericsson, Motorola und NTT DOCOMO (stehen hinter UIQ und MOAP(S)) die Software als Open Source frei zugeben.

Dazu kauft im ersten Schritt Nokia zum Preis von 264 Millionen Euro die Aktienmehrheit von Symbian. Im zweiten Schritt wird dann die Symbian Foundation gegründet welche die Schirmherrschaft über das Produkt und dessen Weiterentwicklung hat. Vor allem die Harmonisierung der Symbian verwandten Derivate wie UIQ ist ein großes Anliegen der Foundation. So will man es schaffen eine einheitliche Symbian Plattform ähnlich Android zu etablieren, die bereits jetzt die Marktführerschaft besitzt.

Nokia kauft Plazes


Nokia setzt seine Einkaufstour im Bereich der social und Web2.0 Anwendungen fort. Heute wurde bekannt, dass der bekannte social location Dienst Plazes von den Finnen gekauft wurde. Über Kaufpreis schweigen sich beide Unternehmen aus. Schön dass es mit Plazes eines der erfolgreichsten Start-ups vor der großen Web2-0 Ära zu derartigen Erfolg bringt.

Android auf einem N95

Aktuell kursieren zwei Videos im Netz die angeblich Android auf einem Nokie N95 zeigen. Die Videos sind beide leider in einer miesen Qualität und man kann nicht erkennen ob auf dem Handset nun ein Video läuft oder es sich tatsächlich um eine echte Android Applikation handelt.

Google verbessert mobile Suche


Google hat gestern einige Verbesserungen in seiner mobilen Suchseite bekannt gegeben. Vor allem die Geschwindigkeit der Suche wurde durch eine neu eingeführte Caching Lösung verbessert. Weiters wurde die Suche enger mit der iGoogle Startseite verbunden. Eine kleine Einführung in die neuen Feature gibt Google Engineer Steve Cheng im folgenden Video:

3G IPhone präsentiert

Steve Jobs lies gestern auf der Apples World Wide Developer Conference endlich die Katze aus dem Sack. Nach heftigen Spekulationen über das IPhone 2.0 in den vergangenen Wochen gab es endlich ein offizielles Statement dazu. Die wichtigsten neuen Features sind natürlich die 3G Unterstützung, A-GPS und der massiv gesunkenen Preis der Geräte.
